My Overall Experience with Different Types of Makeup Primers

Hi all,

This week I want to talk about makeup primers.  Up until about a year ago I never had a great understanding of the purpose of using makeup primers.  But once I got makeup crazy I sought out to get more of an understanding and at the same time try out different types of primers. So today I just wanted to just give my opinions and my personal experiences with different primers that are currently on the market.

Makeup primers are pretty much a base for foundation or face makeup that allows makeup to go on smoother and last longer. Using a makeup primer creates a smooth surface and flawless-looking skin.   You pretty much apply your primer after the moisturizer but before you apply your foundation.

So let’s just get into some of the primers that I have tried out so far.

The Botanic Farm Soft Cover Pore Balm primer is of a balm primer. I have never heard or tried out a balm primer before but when I was looking on the Ulta website like I always do on daily bases I came across this primer and decided to check out the details and the customer reviews on it. After reading everything I became pretty interested and decided to go to my local Ulta store and purchase it.    Here are the product details below.

Details $18.00

The Botanic Farm Soft cover pore balm primer instantly blur visible pores and create a smooth canvas for foundation application with this soft pore primer.  Green tea extracts and witch hazel water help treat your skin while you wear it.  This dual-purpose primer will prevent acne and give the appearance of an even complexion.  With long-lasting and comfortable wear, this primer will never get heavy or cakey under makeup.

Now when I first applied this primer I was like oohh!!. It had a pleasant smell and when applied it and I can say yes it did blur my pores and yes it did create a smooth effect on my face. I have been using this primer for about a month now because I wanted to see how my skin held up when using this primer on a daily bases.  Now you only need a small amount to apply this.  If you put too much on your face, your foundation will not set that well. I found that out the hard way lol.  Other than that, I really liked this primer and after I run out I may repurchase but at the same time, I want to try out other primers that are of a cream/balm base.  There are a few that I will like to try and I hope they go on sale in the near future or I will have to put some funds away to purchase them because they are a little pricey.

The Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer is a gel primer and I can say one of the best on the market.  This primer has so many awesome reviews I decided to try it out.  When I decide to purchase new products I usually purchase the travel size so I can sample and see how it would work with my skin and under my makeup. I was so happy that this primer was offered in travel size for $16.00. which for a travel size primer that is a bit on the pricey side but I really wanted to try it out.  When I applied this primer I was very impressed with how the primer applied and absorbed into my skin.  I noticed that it blurred out my pores and felt really great.  After I applied my foundation, my skin looked flawless. I did a wear test for about 8 hours and my foundation still looked flawless.  Now I don’t use this primer every day because it is pretty pricey and I would rather wear a much affordable primer for my everyday use.  I do wear this primer when I am going out for an event, or even out on a date because I want my face to look flawless. I have listed the product details below.  Like I said this primer is pretty awesome and I will surely purchase this product again.

The Mac Prep + Prime Fix Plus is a different type of primer. It is a hydrating mist that could be used as a primer and it can be also used as a setting spray.  I purchased the Creamy Coconut formula because who doesn’t love coconut. The Mac Fix plus is pretty awesome and I love that you can use this for a few different things.  It’s the perfect hybrid. I use this as a primer, a setting spray and I also use this to spray on my eyeshadow brushes to enhance the pigmentation of shades for an awesome eye look.  This primer hybrid gives me a flawless makeup finish from beginning to end.  Below I have the product details.

The NYX Honey Dew Me Up Skin Serum & Primer is also a hybrid a well.  I saw a video about this product on Instagram which caught my eye.  It was dead of winter and I was having some severe dryness issues with my skin at the time.  Also the word honey caught my eye as well because everyone knows that honey is very good for your skin.  During the winter months, I try to stay hydrated and radiant as much as possible. I was looking for an affordable option that I could wear every day that didn’t break my budget so I decided to purchase this product.  The first day I tried the product, the consistency was different.  This product looks more like a serum than a primer in my opinion.  I was glad that the product had a spatula attached under the cap for easy application. I can say it could have been nice if this came with a pump but other than that I really like this primer.  I have used this primer as my everyday primer for a few months now and this primer works really well with my everyday foundation. My skin stays pretty hydrated and radiant throughout the day.  I have listed the product details below.

Inspired by honey’s golden glow, NYX Professional Makeup developed a primer that neutralizes the appearance of discoloration and redness. Honey Dew Me Up Skin Serum & Primer has innovative light reflective gold flecks which create a luminous look that will help keep your skin looking radiant all day. This gel primer is infused with honey, gold, and collagen.

The last type of primer I wanted to chat about is oil primers.  Oil primers are of course very hydrating and the benefits for those that suffer from very dry skin like myself I wanted to give an oil primer a try just to see how it would work on my skin.  I was intrigued by using an oil primer in general.  I wanted to look radiant but I didn’t want to look oily.  So I decided to try out the NYX Hydra-Touch Oil Primer. I used this primer for about a week and I can say it was very hydrating and it absorbed fairly well into my skin.  The only thing for me is that my pores tend to clog very quickly and after about a week I noticed a few little breakouts not too bad but I can’t see myself using an oil primer on a daily bases.  If I have some skin issues like dry patchiness then yes I will surely use it because it does work very well with addressing that issue. Compared to the other primers that I have used I can honestly say that I could not use this primer on a daily bases. Now I will not say that all oil primers would have this effect on my skin.  If I can find an oil primer that works a little bit better with my skin I would be happy to give oil primers another go at it.   I have listed the details of this oil primer below.

A smooth-looking, dewy canvas and beautiful foundation coverage is just drops away!

Now that is all I got for this makeup primer review.  There are so many primers on the market right now and there is surely a primer out there that will work the best for you.  There are a few other primers that I really want to try out so stay tuned for my next primer reviews in the future.
